Those who have been to international festivals can agree that they are something completely different to what we experience in the UK. With incredible weather, cheap beer and some amazing line ups, more and more people are choosing to combine a holiday with their favourite artists. We first gave our roundup of 2017’s international festivals at the start of January. Now, as we draw considerably closer to the start of the festival season, we’ve updated our original roundup and added in a few more festivals for you to consider. We hope you enjoy and find something brilliant to inspire you.
NOS Alive – Portugal
January 2017: The best international festival in 2016, NOS Alive returns to Lisbon with another incredible line up. With Foo Fighters and Depeche Mode confirmed as the first two headliners, the line up boasts an impressive undercard with The Weeknd, Imagine Dragons, Ryan Adams, The xx, Warpaint, alt-j, The Kills, Koadaline, Parov Stellar and Wild Beasts all confirmed so far. With the backdrop of one of Europe’s finest cities in Lisbon, NOS Alive is one to watch out for.
May 2017 Update: The stellar reputation of NOS Alive is extended this year with The Weeknd and The xx announced as co-headliners on the Thursday night. Royal Blood, Bonobo, Blossoms, Courteeners, Savages, Fleet Foxes, Cage The Elephant, Spoon and The Avalanches shine on an already brilliant line up.
Open’er – Poland
January 2017: Another traditionally strong festival based at Gdynia Airport, the four day festival has announced three headliners so far in the shape of Radiohead, Foo Fighters and The Weeknd plus G-Eazy, James Blake, Mac Miller and Prophets of Rage also on the bill. With a four day ticket plus camping coming to under £125, this is one of the best festival for money experiences you could get.
May 2017 Update: Poland’s finest festival is once again stunning with The xx joining the line up plus Moderat, Royal Blood, The Kills, Charli XCX, Dua Lipa, Jimmy Eat World, George Ezra, Tyler The Creator and Solange standing out on the 2017 edition.
Rock Werchter – Belgium
January 2017: The line up of 2017 so far, the Belgium heavyweight has stunned fans with their current line up. The Thursday sees Arcade Fire headline with support from none other than global stars Kings of Leon and Imagine Dragons. The Friday will be headlined by Radiohead with Linkin Park and metal giants System of a Down co-headlining the Saturday with support from multi-award winning rock legends blink-182. The Sunday will be brought to a close by Foo Fighters with alt-j also on the bill for that day. Possibly the greatest line up we’ve ever seen so far, it is fairly expensive but considering these are the only artists announced so far, expect even more brilliance to come.
May 2017 Update: In January, Rock Werchter was considered perfect but as of May, it’s line up has rocketed to extreme proportions rivalling some of the biggest line ups ever produced. The Chainsmokers, Lorde, Prophets of Rage, The Avalanches, Cage The Elephant, The Lumineers Royal Blood, Birdy, Mura Masa, Beth Ditto, Savages, Dua Lipa, Future Islands, Milky Chance, Glass Animals, Jimmy Eat World and Declan McKenna will have incredible slots at the festival.
Bilbao BBK – Spain
January 2017: The 2017 edition of the festival sees a comeback appearance from The Killers with Depeche Mode and co-headliners Phoenix and Two Door Cinema Club filling the other headline spots. With the return of Fleet Foxes and Die Antwoord, the festival is showing signs of promise for the summer. They announced their second wave of acts in the first big festival announcement of 2017 with the addition of The 1975, Justice and Sundara Karma amongst others.
May 2017: The line up for this year’s Bilbao BBK looks complete with Phoenix supporting The Killers on the Friday and Die Antwoord headlining the festival on the Saturday. Fleet Foxes, Royal Blood, Brian Wilson, Cage The Elephant, Spoon, Circa Waves, The Amazons and The Orwells will all have hotly anticipated slots.
Benicassim – Spain
January 2017: A favourite amongst the UK crowd, Benicassim 2017 will be headlined by Red Hot Chilli Peppers and The Weeknd. With Foals also confirmed on the act, we look forward to the announcement of the final two headliners plus the rest of the line up in the coming months.
May 2017 Update: The rest of the line up has been announced and it’s safe to say it’s a joy to behold. Kasabian will headline the festival whilst Deadmau5 join Foals as a co-headliner. Biffy Clyro, Stormzy, Liam Gallagher, Bonobo, Years & Years, Ride, Courteeners, Kaytranda, Dua Lipa, Blossoms and the Jesus & Mary Chain will all play highly anticipated sets.
INmusic – Croatia
January 2017: The understated festival of 2017, INmusic will be headlined by Canadian alternative giants Arcade Fire and alt-j. Michael Kiwanuka will also make an appearance at the 3 day festival which at 42 euros for the ticket, is the best value for money you will get at a festival.
May 2017 Update: The best value for money by far, INMusic 2017 will also be headlined by the brilliant Kings of Leon and Kasabian whilst Slaves and Public Service Broadcasting will also play the festival.
NOS Primavera Sound – Portugal
January 2017: The 2017 Porto festival has a stunning alternative line up with Bon Iver, Aphex Twin and Justice headlining the festival. Also announced so far is Run The Jewels, Skepta, Miguel, Nicolas Jaar, Metronomy, Flying Lotus, Angel Olsen and Teenage Fanclub in a line up filled with great artists.
May 2017 Update: No new names have been announced for the festival but still it looks set to be a wonderful start to June for those attending.
Nova Rock – Denmark
January 2017: The Danish hard rock festival will be headlined in 2017 by System of a Down, Green Day, Linkin Park with blink-182. Pendulum, Prophets of Rage, Fatboy Slim and Slayer leading the undercard in a brilliant line up for rock fans.
May 2017 Update: No new names have been announced for the 2017 edition of the festival but some other noticeable artists on the line up include Rag’n’Bone Man, Knife Party and Steel Panther.
Primavera Sound – Spain
January 2017: The Barcelona festival at the end of May will see a huge number of artists perform including Arcade Fire, Aphex Twin, Frank Ocean, Run the Jewels, Bon Iver, Mac DeMarco, The xx, Teenage Fanclub and Skepta in a genre spanning 5 day festival.
May 2017 Update: Cigarettes After Sex, Formation, Kate Tempest, Glass Animals, Julia Jacklin, Miguel, Solange, Sampha, Whitney, Grace Jones, Metronomy, Van Morrison and Wild Beasts will all be artists to try and see in this lengthy yet entertaining festival.
Rock AM Ring – Germany
January 2017: The German equivalent of Reading & Leeds festival returns in 2017 with headliners Rammstein, System of a Down and Die Totenhosen. With Prophets of Rage, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Bastille, Five Finger Death Punch, Slaves and Alter Bridge, the festival promises to be a heavyweight for rock fans.
May 2017 Update: The full line has been announced with Liam Gallagher, Jake Bugg, Rag’n’Bone Man, Crystal Fighters and Sum 41 all high up on the 2017 festival.
Roskilde – Denmark
January 2017: The Danish festival known for combining world leading artists with lesser known local talent on their line up currently has Foo Fighters, Arcade Fire, Justice, Moderat, The Weeknd, blink-182, Solange, G-Eazy and The Lumineers across the nine stages that the festival has to offer. With increased arts and attractions, the festival offers a huge amount more in addition to the music.
May 2017 Update: The full line up for this year’s festival has been announced with A Tribe Called Quest, The xx, The Avalanches, Halsey, Father John Misty, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Nas, Lorde, Royal Blood alongside many more plying the festival.
Super Bock Super Rock – Portugal
January 2017: A relatively new festival based in the centre of Lisbon sees Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Deftones as the first confirmed artists on the bill. With the 2016 edition boasting Kendrick Lamar, Jamie xx, Iggy Pop, The National and Massive Attack, the 2017 festival will be one to keep an eye on.
May 2017 Update: The majority of the line up has been announced with additions including the likes of London Grammar, The Orwells, Future, Tyler The Creator and Foster The People.
Sziget – Hungary
January 2017: Located on an island in Budapest, the 7 day party that is Sziget will host over 1,000 performances from artists spanning multiple genres. The first announcement included Major Lazer, Two Door Cinema Club, Tom Odell, Mac DeMarco, Oliver Heldens and Oh Wonder amongst others with big name artists from the world of Pop, Rock and Electronic expected soon to fill more of the line up.
May 2017 Update: The week long party that is Hungary’s Sziget returns this year with a bang. Kasabian, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, P!nk, Wiz Khalifa and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike join Major Lazer as headliners whilst there are big slots from Flume, PJ Harvey, alt-j, Rita Ora, Biffy Clyro, Interpol, Birdy, Rudimental, Metronomy , George Ezra and The Vaccines plus many more.
Mad Cool – Spain
January 2017: A refreshing new festival based in Madrid, Mad Cool Festival prides itself on sustainability and responsibility with a focus on the complete cultural experience for its crowd. With a stellar line up headlined by Foo Fighters, Green Day and Kings of Leon, the festival will also host appearances by alt-j, Ryan Adams, Wilco, Foster the People, The Lumineers, Kodaline, Wolf Alice and Moderat. With tickets at only 149 euros, this is a great opportunity to see some of the biggest American rock bands of the last 20 years.
May 2017 Update: The full line up for one of Europe’s biggest new festival looks to be complete with the huge additions of Manic Street Preachers, M.I.A, Foals, Rancid, George Ezra, Catfish & The Bottlemen alongside many more huge names.
Lollapalooza Chicago – USA
January 2017: No announcements have been made so far but with strong Muse, Green Day and Daft Punk rumours, this is a festival that could end up as one of the strongest festivals of the year.
May 2017 Update: The full line up for the festival has finally been announced and it’s huge. Muse were indeed confirmed as headliners alongside The Killers, Chance The Rapper and Arcade Fire. The xx, Lorde, blink-182, DJ Snake, Justice and alt-j top the undercard whilst there will also be huge performances from Cage The Elephant, Wiz Khalifa, Foster The People, Liam Gallagher, Run The Jewels and many more.
May 2017: The festival chain branches to Paris for the first time in 2017 and what a stunning line up it’s starting with. The Weeknd and Red Hot Chilli Peppers headline whilst Lana Del Rey, Imagine Dragons, London Grammar, alt-J, Liam Gallagher, Pixies and Skepta shine on the undercard.
Pukkelpop – Belgium
May 2017: One of the biggest European festival, Pukkelpop returns in 2017 with The xx, PJ Harvey, Interpol, Mac DeMarco, Halsey, Clean Bandit, Bastille, London Grammar, Elbow, Flume and Mumford & Sons standing out on the brilliant line up.
Bonnaroo – Tennesee, USA
May 2017: US heavyweight festival Bonnaroo delivers a sensational line up in 2017 with a rare headline appearance from U2 plus Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Weeknd and Chance The Rapper. Major Lazer, Flume, Lorde, The xx, Cage The Elephant and Travis Scott star on the undercard which includes a huge amount of wonderful artists.
Governor’s Ball – New York, USA
May 2017: The New York festival returns in 2017 with Chance The Rapper, Phoenix and Tool headlining the festival. Cage The Elephant, Lorde, Flume Childish Gambino, Wu-Tang Clan, Wiz Khalifa, Royal Blood, Franz Ferdinand, Mac DeMarco, Skepta, Beach House lead the supporting cast and this year’s event provides a large range of diversity on the line up.
Bottlerock – California, USA
May 2017: Foo Fighters, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Maroon 5 headline 2017’s BottleRock festival which will take place in Napa Valley. Also on the line up are Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Band of Horses and Frightened Rabbit plus many more.
