2016 will be remembered for many reasons. It was a year in which decisions have led to a new US President set to take office in the upcoming weeks and the UK’s departure from the EU in the following years. It was a year in which we lost some of the greatest (literally the Greatest in Muhammed Ali’s case) musicians, actors and sportsmen of all time – David Bowie, Prince, George Michael, Lemmy, Leonard Cohen, Alan Rickman, Carrie Fisher, Ronnie Corbett, Gene Wilder, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Harper Lee, Andrew Sachs and Debbie Reynolds to name but a few. It was a year full of events which pulled the nation together – the 90th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, the meteoric success of Andy Murray, the odds-defying success of Leicester City Football Club and the year Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in The Revenant. Alongside all these events, we were treated with an incredible year of music, with huge comebacks and rising stars taking centre stage and leading the steady domination of UK music on the world music scene. In this section, we give you our Best of Music 2016. With plenty of categories and many deserving nominees, it’s been difficult to select winners but nevertheless, we have done so. We hope you enjoy our Best of 2016, and here’s wishing for an incredible 2017 too.
